Paris Hilton's Media Company AXE Ads on Musk's X: Formally Twitter

In recent news, a significant shift has occurred in the advertising landscape of X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, now owned by Elon Musk. Paris Hilton's media company, 11:11 Media, which had previously inked a content and commerce deal with X, has suspended its advertisements on the platform. This decision comes amidst a broader advertiser exodus from X, raising questions about the platform's future and the reasons behind this mass departure.

Behind The Scenes

Paris Hilton, the well-known influencer and entrepreneur, inked a deal with X in October 2023. Under this agreement, Hilton and her company, 11:11 Media, were to create four original video content programs per year featuring live-shopping features. This partnership was expected to explore new ways to connect with followers across various formats, including video, live video, and live shopping.

Paris Axe X

The decision to suspend advertising on X comes after a controversy surrounding Elon Musk's public endorsement of an antisemitic conspiracy theory. This endorsement has led to many prominent brands, including some of the world's largest media companies, halting their advertising on X. The list of companies includes Disney, Paramount, NBCUniversal, Comcast, Lionsgate, Warner Bros. Discovery, and Apple.

Results Of Musk's Alleged Endorsement

A slew of suspension of advertising by these major brands, including Paris Hilton's 11:11 Media, deals a significant reputational blow to X. This move casts fresh doubts on the future of the business that Musk and X CEO Linda Yaccarino had vowed would become profitable once more as early as next year. The controversy also raises questions about the platform's content moderation policies. Ads for IBM and other major brands were found appearing alongside pro-Nazi content on the platform. In response, IBM suspended all advertising on X, calling the situation "entirely unacceptable."

The Response

In a blog post responding to the brand exodus, X accused Media Matters, a progressive media watchdog group, of aggressively searching for pro-Nazi content in a way that "misrepresented the real user experience" and could "mislead advertisers." Musk threatened a lawsuit against Media Matters, to which the group's president responded, saying, "If he does sue us, we will win."

Conclusion

The decision by Paris Hilton's media company and other major brands to suspend advertising on X underscores social media platforms' challenges in balancing freedom of speech with the need to provide a safe and respectful environment for users and advertisers. As the situation unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible content moderation in today's digital age.
