‘Just Gonna Start Carrying Money Again‘: Texas Man Stops At QuikTrip For Gas. Then He Peels A Sticker Off The Tap-To-Pay Reader

A man stopped at a Texas QuikTrip for a quick refuel when he realized something weird: a suspicious tap-to-pay sticker imposed on top of the gas pump’s real tap-to-pay button.

TikTok user @r_gibbons_5 posted a video with his discovery on July 4. In the video, @r_gibbons_5 is standing beside his car at the gas pump. But he’s not pumping gas yet. And for a very good reason.

“I get out at the QuikTrip,” he says, “and I’ve been seeing this going around. I don’t know if it’s real.”

He turns the camera so it faces the Verifone tap to pay on the gas pump, and then he peels a sticker off of the interface. It is emblazoned with a larger version of the symbol found on the contactless readers. “I don’t know. It seems a little sketch to me,” the TikToker says to close the video.

Viewers Are Tired Of Gas Station Scams

In the comments, viewers appear exasperated to learn of yet another gas station scam they need to be wary of going forward.

“Great, now we have to look for these as well,” wrote one person. “I’m always pulling on the card holder to see if it’s real or a scam.”

“I go in and pay for my gas,” a second person said. “I just don’t like it at the pump. It sucks not being able to trust anything.”

A third person said they’ve given up: “Just gonna start carrying cash again.”

Others offered suggestions on how to get around potential fraud at gas stations. “Fun fact: Tap to Pay from Android and Apple Pay doesn’t expose your details,” said one viewer. “So cool.”

And some viewers even suggested that the sticker might not be fraud at all.

One person said, “We’re certain they aren’t just bigger icons over the smaller ones, right?” In response, another viewer wrote, “That’s exactly all it is. Just a sticker to make the icon bigger without having to replace the entire display.”

No, This Isn’t A Scam (But Real Ones Are Out There)

According to Texas authorities, the commenters suggesting this isn’t a scam are correct. Just last week, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation addressed several viral social media clips, confirming that there’s no evidence this is an active scam.

That doesn’t mean skepticism at the pump is unwarranted. Credit card skimming is still a very real problem facing communities across the country. Ironically, this social media conversation could potentially deter people from using tap to pay, which is a more secure form of payment than the traditional chip.

To recap: Look both ways at the pump, tap to pay when you can, and—if all else fails—just go inside and pay with physical money like it’s 2005.
