Julian Edelman has commented on how future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers has handled his alleged upcoming final season and took a slight dig at the controversial 41-year-old Pittsburgh Steelers QB. Edelman also compared Rodgers’ approach to that of his former teammate, Tom Brady.
Comparisons between Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers have been made a few times in recent years, but not in negative light, as Brady went to the Bucs and won a Super Bowl, while Rodgers went to the Jets and nuked both his reputation and the franchise, winning just five games across two seasons.
While Edelman didn’t explicitly say so, the longtime former New England Patriots receiver ribbed Rodgers for the attention he craves by essentially calling him the Boy Who Cried Wolf.
“You can’t even put those guys in the same sentence, because we didn’t know it was Tom Brady’s last year. When it was [Brady’s] last year, he didn’t want the distraction of that,” Edelman said on The Herd.
“He wanted to go out and play his best possible football that he could play the last year of his career without making it a distraction. Now, we know it’s [Rodgers’] last year… we’ve heard that before.”
After signing a one-year, $13.65 million contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers earlier this year, Rodgers has followed that up by saying this will be his last season. As Edelman points out, however, Rodgers has been flirting with retirement for a few years now, so it’s difficult to take anything he says on the topic at face value.
Even with the signing of Rodgers, the bookies aren’t expecting all that much from the Pittsburgh Steelers are they currently have +4400 odds to win the Super Bowl, which is longer odds than the likes of the Chicago Bears, Tampa Bay Bucs, Los Angeles Chargers, Denver Broncos and Minnesota Vikings.
