Former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell has picked up the endorsement of the Electric Cooperatives of Alabama’s political action committee in his bid to become the state’s next attorney general in 2026.
As the political arm of the Alabama Rural Electric Association of Cooperatives, the PAC made the announcement Monday.
“Jay Mitchell is a candidate who understands and is deeply committed to the issues that matter most to Alabama’s electric cooperatives—protecting our ability to provide safe, reliable, and affordable power while supporting the people and businesses that make up rural Alabama,” said Karl Rayborn, President & CEO of AREA.
“He cares about the unique needs of rural communities and the critical role that electric cooperatives play in keeping Alabama strong and moving forward.”
The PAC is highlighting Mitchell’s reputation for fairness, integrity, and principled leadership, with a focus on serving the people of Alabama.
To earn the organization’s support, leaders must “prioritize the needs of rural areas, promote sound energy policy, and strengthen the economic vitality of communities throughout the state.”
Other Republican candidates for the open seat include Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey and Katherine Robertson, general counsel to current Attorney General Steve Marshall.
The 2026 Alabama primary election date is set for May 19, 2026.
