Jacksonville State University mourns passing of beloved alumnus and advocate

Jacksonville State University announced the passing of Ralph Burke, a proud alumnus, former state legislator, and lifelong advocate for education and public service, in a public tribute shared this week. The university extended condolences to his wife, Joy, and the many family members, friends, and colleagues mourning his loss. Burke passed away on July 3, 2025, at the age of 65.

A native of Rainsville, Burke graduated from Plainview High School in 1978, where he was a talented athlete. He went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Jacksonville State University in 1983, followed by a master’s degree in Education Administration and an Education Specialist (Ed.S.) degree, also from JSU.

Burke represented DeKalb County in the Alabama House of Representatives from 1983 to 1998, where he was known for championing educational initiatives and supporting the Northeast Alabama region. After leaving the legislature, he continued to serve the region through various roles at Jacksonville State, including Director of JSU Gadsden from 1998 to 2016, Director of Corporate, Foundation, and Community Relations until his retirement in 2018, and later assisting the Office of the President with community relations in Etowah County.

In civic life, Burke was an active leader, serving on the Executive Board of Leadership Etowah, chairing the Etowah County Mega Sports Complex Authority, and serving as a Board Member of the Alabama Music Hall of Fame from 1994 to 2006. He was also active in the Church of the Highlands and, for many years, sang gospel music.

Though deeply rooted in his hometown of Rainsville, Burke’s work and influence extended throughout DeKalb and Etowah counties.

“Ralph Burke dedicated his life to making Northeast Alabama a better place,” Jacksonville State President Dr. Don C. Killingsworth, Jr. said in the university’s statement. “He was a proud alumnus and passionate advocate for education, not just at Jax State but across our entire region. More than that, Ralph was a friend to everyone he met. He will be remembered for his warm heart, generous spirit, and unwavering commitment to the communities he served.”

Bill Fuller, former chair of the Alabama House Ways and Means Committee, offered a tribute to his former colleague.

“Here was indeed a PRINCE among men and a true Friend of Jesus! He radiated joy and encouragement for many years amid the tribulations and challenges of our adventures in the Alabama House, deeply trusted by his fellow members and never losing sight of his beloved District folks,” Fuller said. “His sweet spirit and beautiful voice are surely a fresh delight to the hosts surrounding God’s throne! Godspeed, Precious Brother Ralph!”

A visitation for Burke is scheduled for Thursday, July 10, 2025, from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Meadowbrook Church, 2525 Rainbow Drive in Gadsden. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m.
