A woman says her date “crashed out” after their male server made a bold gesture when he noticed that the couple split the check.

In a video with over 371,000 views, New Jersey-based TikToker Brooke (@brookematar) grits her teeth in a selfie video as she recounts the awkward first date. She uses the song “Man Of The Year” by Lorde in the background, following a trend of women calling out disappointing behavior from ex-partners.

On-screen text reads, “He crashed out & cursed me off because a waiter took my name off my credit card after he made me split the check and DMed me he wanted to take me on a real date.”

The caption asks, “Like how was that my fault?????”

Should Women Split The Check On The First Date?

In the comments, many women say the server’s direct message should give her OG date a reality check about asking her to split the check. Some encouraged her to go on a date with the server.

“That was the universe showing him your power,” one suggested.

“So chivalry isn’t dead. Restored my faith in men,” another wrote.

“Girl, that’s ur new man wyd,” a third joked.

According to a 2021 poll by Affirm shared with CBS News, 56% of American singles believe that the check should be split on the first date. However, some women on the r/Dating subreddit believe a male date asking to split the bill means he isn’t that interested.

“Woman here. To me, it’s not about money. It’s about the signal they send out,” one Redditor claimed.

“The funny thing is, when a man is extremely interested in you, the question about who pays what will never be raised or even become an issue,” another wrote.

“I feel it’s different for everyone, but I’m looking for someone to form a traditional relationship with. Because of that, if he doesn’t want to pay, it probably won’t work,” a third added.

But some women said they happily offer to split the check with a new date.

“I always offer to split on the first date and every date after. Most of the time, guys clarify they prefer to pay, but I never care if they don’t,” one wrote.

“I prefer to pay my share on a first date even if he wants to do it as a way to show that I owe him nothing for the rest of the night,” another remarked.

Do Women Approve Of The Server’s Bold Move?

The TikToker shares that neither her original date nor the message from the server has a fairy tale ending.

She revealed in a comment, “Unfortunately [the server] started sending me pictures of the street I lived on.”

Other commenters clocked the creepy behavior from the server.

“That would creep me out. it’s no for both of em,” a commenter said.

“That’s too stalkerish for me idk,” another wrote.

“I’d find that terrifying,” a third noted.
