Former Chicago White Sox pitcher Bobby Jenks passed away at the age of 44. The two-time All-Star was fighting a battle with stomach cancer after being diagnosed with adenocarcinoma.

ESPN informed its following of the unfortunate news with a post on its social media outlets. It’s since received backlash for the wording of the message.

Bobby Jenks, a two-time All-Star pitcher for the Chicago White Sox, who was on the roster when the franchise won the 2005 World Series, died on Friday in Sintra, Portugal, the team announced.

“On the roster” was the phrase that followers latched onto. It seemed an unnecessary addition to the post. Some believed it was dismissive of his contributions to the White Sox organization.

Bobby Jenks was much more than simply “on the roster” for the 2005 World Series team. He was a key Chicago reliever, recording a 1-1 record with six saves and 2.75 ERA across 32 appearances.

He was best in the playoffs, racking up four saves in six postseason appearances. He also recorded the final out of the season to clinch the MLB title.

That was Bobby Jenks’s rookie year. He played a total of seven Major League seasons, six of which came with the White Sox.

The right-hander totaled 173 saves throughout his career. Forty-one came in his 2006 campaign in Chicago, his highest single-season output.

That sparked a run of five consecutive years with 25+ saves and 50+ innings. White Sox fans wanted those accomplishments to be known after the ESPN post.

“ESPN stating he was ‘on the roster’ seems to be a gross understatement of his actual accomplishments,” said one person. It was a sentiment shared by a large group of sports fans.

“‘On the roster’ is laughable,” echoed another follower. “The White Sox don’t win the world series without Bobby Jenks,” commented this baseball viewer.

ESPN should be ashamed and embarrassed for writing something like this! “Was on the roster”? He was THE CLOSER on a championship winning team. Do some research before you release something. Have some respect! RIP Bobby Jenks condolences to his family and teammates.

ESPN likely meant no ill-will with its Bobby Jenks post. The wording certainly could’ve been improved.
