Canadian MLS Players Taunt American Fans By Forcing Lengthy Delay In 4th Of July Fireworks Display

MLS Fireworks Galaxy Whitecaps Sprints Delay Protest Taunt 4th of July

MLS fans were invited to celebrate America’s birthday with a fireworks display after the Los Angeles Galaxy claimed a dominant victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps on the 4th of July. However, the visiting team caused a lengthy delay in the postgame festivities by refusing to exit the field of play.

It is unclear as to whether it was intentional or a matter of circumstance.

This frustrating sequence of events took place on Friday evening at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson. The Galaxy, the worst team in Major League Soccer, captured a momentous victory for the United States on Independence Day with a 3-0 win over the second-place Whitecaps. Los Angeles opened the scoring in the second minute. They scored two more in the second half and kept a clean sheet. Jayden Nelson later picked up a red card when Vancouver crashed out in the 90th + 2 minute.

Fans were encouraged to stay in their seats after the game was over to celebrate the holiday with fireworks.

The grounds crew got the field all set up for the show. Everything was ready to go.

However, the fireworks could not begin until every player and coach on both teams had left the pitch. That became an issue when the Whitecaps stayed on the field for an extended period of time to work on their fitness. It was not a problem at first. Nobody cared about a few sets of sprints.

It very quickly became an issue when the public address announcer warned that they would not begin the fireworks show until the field was cleared. Vancouver refused to get off.

Players would pretend like they were (very slowly) walking back toward the locker room only to turn right around at the last second and run the length of the pitch. Fans started to boo.

This back and forth went on for more than 20 minutes.

There are three things that might’ve happened here. Perhaps the Whitecaps were serving punishment from their gaffer after an ugly loss to a terrible team. Maybe they always stay on the field after MLS games to run a few additional sprints. Or, this was an intentional act of defiance on the 4th of July. I cannot say for certain but I would think it was a combination of the three scenarios. This was not a coincidence!
