Auburn men’s basketball head coach Bruce Pearl has transformed the program into one of the premier destinations in college basketball — a remarkable turnaround for a team that was just about dead upon his arrival in 2014.

During his time on The Plains, Pearl has led the Tigers to two Final Four appearances, along with capturing three SEC regular season conference titles and two SEC Tournament banners as well.

Though he is coming off what was inarguably his greatest season yet at Auburn, the veteran head coach — who is now 65 years old — knows he approaches the twilight of his career.

It doesn’t seem he is planning on retiring imminently, however he says his son and assistant coach Steven Pearl is ready to take over when that day does come.

“He’s ready,” Pearl told Andy Katz on The Sideline.

While Pearl did not specifically say Steven is primed to take over at Auburn, he made clear that his son is prepared for a head coaching role when the opportunity arises.

“He’s ready,” the head coach said again. “Steven’s my defensive coordinator and Mike Burgomaster is my offensive coordinator. I’m getting a little bit older. I can still game plan, like I’ve always been able to teach and things like that, (but) it doesn’t work quite as fast as it used to work. So I’ve got great coordinators helping me coach my team. It’s a new concept and I think it’s something other coaches should look at.”

In recent weeks, speculation has swirled about Pearl potentially entering the political arena.

With U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville opening his seat by running for governor in 2026, some have floated Pearl — an outspoken advocate for Israel and never shy about sharing controversial views — as a possible candidate.
